I suppose she's focusing on the principle of giving for everyone and not on what Richard Gere or any other celebrity in particular has done. Perhaps instead of attributing the bad things in life to "karma" it could be better attributed to the selfish acts of others. If the true meaning of "karma" is what one deserves from previous acts, then giving to others isn't really reversing your bad karma, but the bad karma of others.
